How did my apartment get so messy when I just moved in? It’s a mystery. I somehow managed to clean it all up. Breaking the cleaning down to smaller, more manageable tasks helped me get it done. I am much more productive in my new, clean space as I have more mental clarity.
Refrigerator
I had to throw out a lot of food that expired. My mother made me take a bunch of food with me when I moved out fearing that I wouldn’t eat properly. Some of them were things I didn’t really like and they ended up turning into garbage. I felt guilty about creating waste, but there was no going back. I had to remove them before the spoiled food stink up the whole fridge. I wiped all the surfaces as well.
Clothes
It was just winter, and now it’s hot? South Korean weather is so extreme. I put away some of my thicker clothes into storage boxes. I picked out some clothes that don’t fit me anymore to donate. I successfully arranged the remaining clothes into the hangers and drawers. Now it’s easier to find the item I’m looking for.
Desk
My desk was so cluttered, there wasn’t even space to put my MacBook Air. I put all the rubbish into the little trash can I have for my desk and organized everything else into the desk drawer. I wiped the desk surface clean before I put things back on. I even managed to straighten out the cable situation so they’re not a jumbled mess. This was very difficult with two computers, and my preference for wired devices over wireless ones. It’s as neat as it can be with over a dozen different cables. My desk is still crowded because the desk isn’t big and I have to have two computers on it, but at least there is no unnecessary stuff contributing to the chaos. I do wish I had a larger desk than the one came with the apartment because with two sets of computers, there is barely any space to do anything else like writing in my notebook or planner, but it will have to do for now.
Bedroom
The floor of my bedroom barely had any space. The wrappers and packaging from unpacking things were littered all over the floor. And I hadn’t even unpacked everything! It seemed overwhelming at the time but I picked things up one at a time and put them into either a garbage bag or a recycling box. The floor was cleared sooner than I thought, but it was still very dusty. I used a rag to wipe the floor clean, then washed dust off the rag with soap. I felt so accomplished after cleaning.
Bathroom
The bathroom in my apartment is very small, and being women, my roommate and I have a lot of toiletries. Thankfully, my roommate brought a shelf and offered to let me share it with her. I neatly lined up my shower products in the order that I use them in the shower. Now things don’t have to be scattered over the sink and the windowsill. I can just pump them from the shelf so it’s very convenient. I scrubbed everything while I was at it.
Thankfully, my apartment is very small so there wasn’t too much to clean. I’ll try to put things back where they belong and clean weekly so I don’t make a mess again.
